Great Kingdom Exploits P3: The Power of Obedience and God's Grace in Victory

In our exploration of great kingdom exploits, we turn our attention to Deuteronomy, where we witness the remarkable victories of Israel as they crossed the Jordan River and conquered nations mightier than themselves. These exploits were not a result of their own merit or personal integrity but stemmed from the grace and power of God.

In Deuteronomy 9:1-6, we find the key to these great victories.

Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?” But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you. After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Deuteronomy 9:1-6

Verse 3 reminds us that it is the Lord who goes before us like a devouring fire, destroying our enemies and granting us success. We are cautioned against attributing these victories to our own goodness or righteousness but rather to the wickedness of those we conquer.

Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.

Deuteronomy 9:3 KJV

The obedience of Israel in the wilderness was pivotal in preparing them for these exploits. Deuteronomy 8:16-17 emphasizes that God humbled and tested them for their own good, so they would not boast in their own strength but recognize that it is God who gives us power to succeed and fulfill His covenant.

He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good. He did all this so you would never say to yourself, 'I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.

Deuteronomy 8:16-17

The testing in the wilderness, spanning from 40 days to 40 years, produced obedience in Israel, positioning them to walk in the fullness of God's promises. Verse 3 of Deuteronomy 9 underscores that it was not Israel's strength or strategies but the fire of the Lord Himself that paved the way for victory.

Obedience, holiness, and encounters with the Lord are the keys to unlocking the power of God for great exploits. As we guard our hearts and remain humble, acknowledging that it is not by our own goodness but by the grace of God, we position ourselves to receive His abundant blessings.

Therefore, let us decree kingdom decrees of obedience, guidance, and surrender, inviting the consuming fire and cloud of God's presence to lead us.
